Choosing what to wear on safari in Kenya has become quite a hustle for most travellers looking to either travel light or have the time of their lives while dressed to kill on that Kenyan Safari. Some of the questions to ask before choosing what to wear on safari in Kenya are;
- How long will is your Kenyan Safari?
Depending on the amount of time your Kenyan Safari will take, planning what to wear while on your safari will be important. A typical Kenyan safari can take anywhere from 2-10 days depending on the type of safari. It could be a family trip vacation or just a short stay. For either of these occasions, one has to properly plan for what they will wear.
- How easy will it be to carry what you would like to wear?
Luggage is heavy. Breaking your back while moving around with luggage wouldn’t be the best choice of what to do while on your Kenyan Safari. While picking what to wear, it is very important to consider what you will pack. What you pack will have a great impact on the weight of your luggage which will relatively also affect luggage costs. So it’s best to just pick what would be necessary to wear while on your safari.
- What is the occasion?
Besides planning for what to wear on the normal safari in Kenya, it is good to know what one would wear if they were planning for an occasion in Kenya in addition to their normal safari. Some of these occasions may be;
- Conference Meetings.
- What is the time of the year?
Finally, the time of the year. While planning your safari to Kenya, it would be important to also plan your daily selection of attire or outfits for the perfect safari experience according to the weather. Kenya has seasons when it is very cold and seasons when it is undeniably hot. Planning for the case in what to dress on a safari in these two situations would be important. In June, July and August, the temperatures in Kenya can get very chilly. I have included a couple of recommendations on what to wear when it gets cold in this post.
What about those with health conditions?
There are times when it could get really hot and there are times when the weather could get really chilly. And for travellers having skin or chest conditions, choice of what to wear can be difficult at times. It is advised that travellers with strict medical complications to follow advise of choice of clothing given to them by their doctor. Each and every traveller on safari will be best taken care of and supported in case of an arising health issue in line with the weather conditions in Kenya. There is however no need to worry, I have put together a simple list of what to wear according to the time of the day while on your safari in Kenya;
- Safari Wear.
Safari wear simply means clothes that you can wear while going on the frequent game drives during your safari. For easier selection, I have come up with just a few things that both ladies and gents can wear during a game drive safari;
- A safari Short.
- A hat.
- Safari Boots.
- Comfortable shoes.
- Short sleeve shirts. (Khaki is most preferred)
- Sport socks.
- Safari Trousers.
- Night Wear.
Night wear is best for travellers looking to have an evening out of the normal and usual safari routine. Evening outs may be taken in the city in Nairobi or Mombasa. For a typical night out, I recommend that one can choose a light outfit (for women) and a simple pair of casual trousers and either a short sleeve or long sleeve shirt.
- Swim Wear.
When it comes to swimming, one can decide to wear what they want. In case of a diving or a scuba diving activity, the proper swim wear will be provided by your travel specialist. Swim Wear can include items like;
- Snorkelling Gear (for those having the activity planned with their safari.)
- A swim suit.
- Diving Gear. (For those having the activity planned with the safari.)
Gear that will be used for different swimming activities can be provided at ones request. No need to pack and carry it all the way from the other side of the world!
- When it gets really cold.
When it’s chilly outside, it is advised that you put on warm clothing to protect you from the ailments that may affect you. Here is what you can wear when it gets really cold during your safari;
- A warm sweater.
- Waterproof Rain jacket (when it starts raining)
- Simple Jacket.
- When it is hot.
The heat in Kenya can be a menace at times. But funny enough, it’s a reason why most travellers come to Kenya! When it gets hot, it is advised that you dress lightly to avoid getting rashes and suffering from other skin related ailments. Here’s what you can wear;
- A hat.
- A safari Short.
The weather in Kenya changes with seasons just like it does everywhere else; so what to wear is certainly not rocket science. As normal human beings, it would be advised to dress according to ones choice of best fit and the weather conditions. However, on safari, it is advised that one dresses in either khaki or green coloured clothing. Here’s why;
- It is less of a distraction to wild animals.
- It would be easier to recognize you as people on a safari by authorities.
- It enhances uniformity as a group.
It is however important to note that dressing in camouflage-pattern clothes is prohibited by local authorities because it is worn by the local authorities themselves. And again, dressing in bright colours while on safari is not allowed. Bright coloured clothes may be most suitable for either the beach or for excursions in towns like Mombasa and Nairobi.
Different accommodation spots, game hotels and tented camps have provisions for laundry services at a surcharge while others may provide the limited service for free. Most of the times, just a small amount of laundry may be done for a single traveller which includes one or two items per person per day. Laundry is done manually. (by hand) This service however does not involve the washing of one’s personal items such as ones inner clothing. Detergents and soap may be provided to the traveller at their time of need for that case.
